I just discovered that my Ubuntu test machine (running Dapper, not thecurrent bleeding edge), installed with a base level of server packages,does not have cron installed.

It does, of course, have the /etc/cron.(daily weekly) directories, andcheerfully optimistic packages have populated them with various thingsthat they no doubt expect to get run every so often in order to keep thesystem working smoothly.

(Evidently none of them actively depended on cron, or it would havebeen installed.

CSS is assembly language

I was struck by a thought today: CSS is an assembly language. Thisexplains a lot of its issues, because (like other assembly languages)it suffers from the problem that you can't communicate your high-levelintentions, only your low-level actions.

An Amanda gotcha with dumps to disk

One of the configurations that Amanda supportsthese days is dumping to disk instead of to tape. The leading way to dothis is to use your disk space as virtual tapes, using the 'file' outputdriver (per here ).

When you do this, it is vital to remember that to Amanda, these aretapes . Very fast tapes, but tapes. And they have all of the limitationsof tape. Such as that only one thing can be written to them at once.
