XHTML vs HTML5

Every so often these days, an XHTML fanatic goes off on a rant abouthow HTML5 is all a horrible mistake and a nightmare ( this one is abouttypical for the breed, and is what set me off in turn). These people arecommitting a simple mistake: they misunderstand the nature of the world.

It's really simple; XHTML and HTML5 are entirely different sorts ofstandards . XHTML is an invented standardand has failed because it had very high costs of implementationand use and provided almost

Imagine

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No

My thoughts on why invented standards succeed or fail

So suppose that you have a standard that, regardless of the risks , has invented things instead of just documentingexisting practice . What helps it succeed or pushes ittowards failure?

(By success I mean that the standard is implemented and gets used; byfailure I mean that it is either not implemented or ignored.)

Implementing and using a standard has costs, and people are lazy . This implies that a standard's chances of success aregoing to depend a lot on its benefits relative to the current statusquo

The risk continuum for standardization success

Following on from the three stereotypes of standards approaches : so you have a standard. Now, how likely is it tosucceed, or at least to be implemented (since standards more or lessnecessarily fail if they're never implemented)?

Well, that depends on the specific standard. But we can ask whatthe continuum of risks is for each stereotype of approaches tostandardization.

At one end of the continuum is pure documentation , where thebehavior the standard calls for already exists and so the standardis 'implemented
