Look at your pull-based system for things that push

Here is a corollary on how push technology breeds spam : even if you have carefully built a pull based systemthat is thus insulated from spam, you need to carefully take a freshlook at it to see if you have any features that do (implicit) pushactions that could be exploited by clever spammers. You'll probablyhave some push features (because they're useful for your users), inwhich case you need a plan for dealing with spam through them.

To be clear here, by '

Why free things are so attractive in universities

I've seen a number of people saying that universities who took advantageof ipsCA 's offer of free SSL certificates foreducational institutions are now getting their money's worth, and thatit clearly would have been better to pay a real SSL CA vendor for realcertificates. Would that it were so simple.

The real attraction of the free ipsCA certificates here (and likely atother universities) was not that they saved you $40 US or so. Their realattraction was that you could get them without

About Darker Than Black - Gemini of the Meteor

I quite enjoyed the original Darker Than Black , ending and all, butI'm still not sure what I think about the second DTB series because Istill haven't made up my mind about the ending. I'm pretty sure that thecreators intend for the ending to be considered a good one, but I can'tdecide whether it's a good ending or actually a disturbing and creepyone.

Apart from that, I liked it and it's a good series. It's

The novelty of frozen brakes

A disconcerting novelty happened to me a few weeks ago: my frontbrakes froze solid. As far as I can tell, I mean that literally; notjust that they seized up, but that they seized up because they werefrozen. As you might imagine, it was more than a bit disconcertingto squeeze the front brake lever and have it have no give at all, especially since the front brakes are the more powerful ones where you do most of yourbraking.

(This is not always the case for me

The Nikon DSLR trick with Auto ISO and Manual mode

Nikon DSLRs have a reasonably smart automatic ISO mode, where you setyour minimum shutter speed and maximum ISO and when the camera has hitthe minimum shutter speed it starts raising the ISO. They are alsofamous (or infamous in some quarters) for not turning off Auto ISOif you go into Manual mode, contrary to what you might expect.

(What happens in this semi-Manual mode is that the camera works outits idea of the correct exposure and then attempts to get there purelyby changing the ISO.

evian x Paul Smith Bottle

New Year's Eve

I do not have New Year resolution to make. It's not that such resolution doesn't work – it does. However, why should we make resolutions simply to make ourselves feel better? Why should anyone? Does anyone? I don't, and I never did.

I turn forty next year. Come to think about it. It didn't take long for me to realize that I haven't had my baby until somewhere near the "half time" of my life. What I

Meetup with St. Louis Catholic Bloggers

Earlier today, I had lunch with a few good (mostly online) friends at Rigazzi's on the Hill (in St. Louis). The food was so-so, the company was great, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was pretty good. It's a little bit tucked away next to Kingshighway, but not too hard to find (plus there's plenty of parking in the area).

I met Snup (from Snup's view from the back pew ) for the first time
