A personal view of the Fedora versus Ubuntu issue

A commentator on the previous entry more orless suggested that I switch from Fedora to Ubuntu. As it happens, thisisn't something that I'm likely to do.

In one sense there ought to be no real difference for me betweenthe two. My personal Linux environment is so customized that I'messentially indifferent to what the distribution does with its desktopenvironment (the usual point of contention for ordinary users); thingslike Gnome and KDE choices and which of the latest peculiar system for managing bits

The joy of debugging other people's programs

There is a peculiar joy that is probably more common among sysadminsthan programmers: the pleasure of having successfully debugged someoneelse's program.

Triumphing over a bug in your own program is already a pretty goodfeeling (assuming that it is a tricky bug, not something stupidlyobvious that leaves you wanting to smack your head). Doing it to someoneelse's program gives you not just the reward of having squashed thebug but also the accomplishment of having sliced through enough of theprogram to find the problem and

Blogging Session - Small Group

I was in a small group with Thomas Peters , @applemachome , @aquinasnmore and a few other awesome attendees at this year's CNMC breakout session #2:

Expect a wrap-up post for this year's CNMC sometime tomorrow, or maybe Monday.

Lino Rulli's Keynote Presentation on "doing things right" in Catholic Media

Lino Rulli —a man with a large nose (an Italian)—spoke to the attendees of the Catholic New Media Celebration during a keynote address on Saturday, and talked about the importance of "doing things right" in new media.

He made three main points:

  1. Study what others are doing, and copy what others are doing right.
  2. Identify your passion and pursue it.
  3. It is not *just the message* that matters.

I fully support these points, and I wish to highlight a few more salient points

Fr. Robert Reed's Keynote at CNMC MMX

Sweet Neat Deep and Eat

Fr. Robert Reed's keynote at this year's CNMC MMX was excellent. He started by giving us a 'goody bag' with something sweet, something neat, something deep, and something to eat. He then spoke about each topic and summarized the reason why we evangelize—not just online, but also on a personal level.

Something Sweet

Takeaway quote from this portion:

"There has to be an appeal, a professionalism, a standard to our craft."

I couldn't say it better

Don't Know

I have been learning to make use of the skill to acknowledge what I don't know that I don't know. Knowledge is different from all other kinds of resources, as we have been told, because it constantly makes itself obsolete.

Last week, one of our talented fellows asked me what's the reason of stopping salbutamol , a short-acting "reliever" medication for chest tightness, in case our patients are coughing up blood from the lungs. I took a deep breath and then told her

At the Catholic New Media Celebration (Boston, MA) [Updated]

I'll be hanging around a bunch of other Catholic techies this Saturday in Boston, MA, at the Catholic New Media Celebration . In case you haven't heard, I just started a new podcast, Catholic Car Wash ( read more about it ), and I thought CNMC MMX would be a great venue for its introduction.

A good friend and fellow Catholic programmer/blogger, Matthew Warner, spent much of last night individually uploading tons of photos from last night's meet-and-greet. I

免費性愛

Woody Allen有句幽默而深刻的說話:"The most expensive sex is free sex." 甚麼是free sex?就是不用付錢而得到的性愛;既是免費,為何又會是最昂貴的呢?Woody Allen說的免費性愛,是指男女朋友或夫妻之間的性愛,那當然是不涉及錢銀交易,可是,說那是
