Some computer power consumption numbers
One of the things we have lying around here is a power meter witha handy convenient watts output, so I've spent parts of yesterdayand today measuring how much power my new machine uses in variouscircumstances.
| booted, idle, X not started | 98 watts |
| one CPU core 100% busy | 132 watts |
| both CPU cores 100% busy | 165 watts |
| idle at a graphical login with the ATI drivers loaded | 127 watts |
| idle at a graphical login without the ATI drivers | 9 |

Some Fedora Core 5 experimentation
The Unofficial Fedora Core FAQ has a sectionon how to install prebuilt packages for various things that can't beshipped as part of Fedora Core, like MP3 players and binary graphicscard drivers. I've always ignored it, installing what I needed by hand;user-friendly installs aren't necessarily very sysadmin friendly, and Inever felt like taking the risk.(I deal with enough badly packaged RPMS as it is.)

A Python coding mistake
There is a world of difference between ' "string" in txt ' and just' "string" '. It doesn't even really jump out as visually wrong to meif it's in a large if condition, which probably means the conditionis big enough that it should be reorganized so that errors are moreobvious, or at least harder to make.

People are ordinary

Not through any fault of their own, butbecause they will be ordinary results, and we're simply just not veryinterested in the ordinary because there's so much of it. By and largewe're driven to the exceptional, the rare; to what stands out.
Thus, the inevitable but often overlooked result of people being social on the Internet is a lot of ordinary, boring blogs, home
