Nippon Steel sues Toyota, China's Baoshan over patent infringement

TOKYO -- Nippon Steel is seeking a court injunction to stop Toyota Motor from producing electric vehicles, in a patent infringement suit against the carmaker and a Chinese steelmaker.

The Japanese company said on Thursday that it has filed a lawsuit against Toyota and Baoshan Iron & Steel, a subsidiary of China's state-run China Baowu Steel Group. It accuses the two companies of infringing Nippon Steel patents that cover nonoriented electrical steel sheet, which is used in electric vehicle motors.

Rio Tinto tests biomass as coal alternative for lower steel emissions

SYDNEY -- Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto is developing a new technology to replace coking coal with farm waste in steelmaking, as part of a growing push within the sector to reduce carbon emissions.

Depending on the results of current and future tests, the company sees a potential to make the technology available on a commercial scale in as early as 10 years.

Steelmaking accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to Rio Tinto. The challenge of cutting this output has brought mining companies together with steelmakers.

LinkedIn shutters China site, calling environment 'challenging'

PALO ALTO, U.S. -- LinkedIn will close down its professional networking site in China this year, the company announced Thursday, citing a "significantly more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements in China."

The Microsoft-owned company said it plans to offer a standalone app called InJob for China that will focus solely on job seeking and not include social networking features such as original posts, comments and sharing.
