LG Display to invest $2.8bn in light-emitting diode facilities

SEOUL (Reuters) -- LG Display said on Tuesday it plans to invest 3.3 trillion won ($2.8 billion) in small- to mid-sized organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel production facilities.

China smartphone maker says UK chip plant purchase 'complete'

TAIPEI -- China's largest smartphone assembler Wingtech Technology on Monday said it has completed its acquisition of the U.K.'s largest chip plant, in a move aimed at securing new sources of semiconductors amid a global supply crunch.

The Chinese company said it received notification last week from Companies House, the U.K. registrar of companies, that ownership of Wales-based Newport Wafer Fab has been transferred to Wingtech subsidiary Nexperia.

Thailand extends lockdown for a fortnight as COVID-19 rages

BANGKOK --The Thai government has extended lockdown measures for two more weeks in order to try and bring a severe third wave of COVID-19 under control as confirmed new cases continue to surge.

Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesperson for the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), told reporters on Aug. 16 that the government had decided to extend the lockdown and nighttime curfew, which was due to end on Aug 18, until Aug 31.

Japan set to extend Tokyo state of emergency to Sept. 12

TOKYO -- Japan plans to extend the state of emergency in cities including Tokyo until Sept. 12 and expand the declaration to seven additional prefectures.

The current deadline for the state of emergency for Tokyo and five other prefectures is set for Aug. 31. A decision to extend the emergency will be made following a meeting of an expert advisory committee on Tuesday.

The seven prefectures to be put under the tighter measures from Aug. 20 are Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Shizuoka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Fukuoka
