NEW YORK (AP) — Peabo Bryson, the two-time Grammy Award-winning R&B singer best known as the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney film duets “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle from “Aladdin,” has died. He was 75.
His family said in a statement that Bryson died Tuesday evening, days after having a stroke.

Woman wanted in alleged assault at Main Street Station
A woman is wanted in connection to an assault at Main Street Station late last month.
Toronto police say they were called to the station in the Danforth Avenue and Main Street area around 5 p.m. on May 28.
The suspect allegedly assaulted a woman in an elevator before fleeing the area.
The victim was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Crews fighting industrial fire in Brampton

Fire crews are on scene fighting a fire at a commercial property in Brampton.
Peel Regional Police say the fire at a business near Intermodal and Goreway drives is sending heavy smoke onto area roadways, causing delays.
Police are advising drivers in the area to keep their windows closed and find alternate routes.
Brampton Fire says there’s a heavy presence of emergency vehicles in the area as firefighters work to douse the blaze.
No injuries have been reported.

MPs get an earful from opponents of ‘lawful access’ bill over privacy concerns
OTTAWA — A group that works to keep the internet surveillance-free says a federal bill intended to help police and intelligence services is “an enormous own goal” against Canada’s economy and security.
Matt Hatfield, executive director of OpenMedia, told MPs studying the bill Tuesday that limited amendments will not salvage the proposed legislation.

Man arrested for alleged antisemitic death threats on social media: Durham police
Durham Regional Police have charged a Clarington man after he allegedly posted several antisemitic death threats on X.
The investigation began in May 2026, when the Durham police Hate Crime and Extremism Unit was contacted by police in Vancouver about the threats.
Investigators identified the suspect, David Edward Smith, aged 58, and executed a search warrant at his residence on June 2, 2026.
Smith was arrested with incident and later released on an undertaking.
He faces a single count of uttering death threats.

NEW YORK (AP) — And now, Take Two: The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has been rescheduled — with President Donald Trump apparently in attendance.
The dinner, cut short in April by a gunman who prosecutors say was trying to assassinate Trump, will now take place on July 24. It will be a more intimate gathering with “significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures,” said Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association.

A Pickering city councillor previously embroiled in multiple misconduct complaints and pay suspensions has announced she’s running for mayor in this year’s municipal elections.
Coun. Lisa Robinson made the announcement in a video Sunday and is set to run against Kevin Ashe, incumbent mayor for the city east of Toronto, in the elections on Oct. 26.

OTTAWA — NDP parliamentary leader Don Davies has introduced a private member’s bill that would compel floor crossers to face their voters before switching parties.
Bill C-278 says no MP would be permitted to cross the floor without first sitting as an Independent and then contesting and winning a seat under the new party banner.
Davies said Prime Minister Mark Carney’s move to secure a majority government through floor crossings was undemocratic and made people question the legitimacy of democratic institutions.

Ontario’s members of provincial parliament will get an extra long break from the legislature this summer, as it takes a 21-week recess.
The extended break comes after the legislature sat for 30 days, following a 14-week winter break.
