Over 4,000 charges laid in retail theft probe involving ‘repeat and prolific offenders’: Toronto police
The thefts are shockingly brazen. Videos shared by Toronto police on Wednesday show multiple suspects walking into stores, loading up bags, suitcases and shopping carts with items and walking out, seemingly without fear of consequence.
Despite the cavalier nature of the alleged crimes, there were indeed consequences.
Toronto police announced over 500 arrests and 4,000 charges in a years-long, ongoing retail theft probe that Supt. Ron Taverner said involves “repeat and prolific offenders” with ties to larger organized crime groups.

The Toronto Zoo is celebrating the arrival of an endangered female pygmy hippo calf, born Sunday morning to 20‑year‑old Kindia.
Zoo staff began monitoring Kindia over the weekend when she showed signs of labour around 8:15 a.m.

Auto sales see second consecutive month of gains in July: DesRosiers
DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. says auto sales in July were up from a year ago, marking the second consecutive month of sales gains.
The firm estimates 173,000 vehicles were sold in the month, slightly up from 172,000 in July 2025.
Andrew King, managing partner at DesRosiers, says a 0.5 per cent gain would perhaps not be worthy of mention in normal times, but these are not normal times for the auto industry.

Ontario Liberal caucus member joins race to become leader
Another Ontario Liberal caucus member has joined the race to become the party’s next leader.
Stephanie Bowman, who represents Don Valley West for the party in the legislature, says she wants to build a party that is competitive across the province.
She had served as campaign co-chair for fellow caucus member Rob Cerjanec until he dropped out of the race last month.
Bowman worked in finance before being elected in 2022, including serving as a member of the Bank of Canada’s board.

3-vehicle collision closes section of Fort York Boulevard in downtown Toronto
Fort York Boulevard has reopened after a collision involving three vehicles closed a portion of it on Wednesday morning.
Police were called to the area of Fort York Boulevard and Spadina Avenue around 9:35 a.m. for reports of a three-vehicle collision where one of the vehicles had flipped over.
A woman in her 30s was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
