Person shot by law enforcement near Washington Monument, Secret Service says
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Secret Service says a suspect who opened fire Monday on the National Mall did so after being confronted by officers.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn said officers returned fire. A bystander was struck by the suspect, Quinn said.
Quinn said the motorcade of Vice President JD Vance transited through the area not long before the shooting, but there was no indication it was the target.
The incident happened Monday afternoon around 15th Street and Independence Avenue near the Washington Monument.

HALIFAX — Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac has launched a civil lawsuit against Google, claiming the online giant defamed him by falsely identifying him as a sex offender in an AI-generated summary.
In December, the Juno Award-winning musician said he learned about the misinformation after a First Nation north of Halifax confronted him with the summary — known as an “AI overview” — then cancelled one of his concerts. The Sipekne’katik First Nation later issued a public apology to MacIsaac.

Three homes under construction damaged by arson in Pickering: Durham police
Police in Durham Region are investigating after three homes were damaged in what authorities describe as an arson that took place in Pickering early Sunday morning.
Emergency crews were initially called to the area of Catalina Manor and Alexander Knox Road at approximately 5:40 a.m. after an active blaze was reported at the site of three homes that were still under construction.
Authorities say the residences were unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

OTTAWA — A union representing more than 120,000 federal public servants whose contracts are up for renegotiation says wage offers presented by the federal government are “insulting” and “unacceptable.”
The Public Service Alliance of Canada says the government has tabled wage proposals that amount to less than one per cent per year for workers in the administrative services, operational services and technical services groups.
