Technology stocks helps S&P/TSX composite index edge higher in late-morning trading

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged higher Monday, while U.S. markets continued to rise after the S&P 500 ended last week at a record high.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 17.78 points at 20,924.30.

Federal corporations to start filing beneficial ownership info with government

OTTAWA — Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne says federal corporations are now required to file beneficial ownership information with Corporations Canada and that some of this information will be made available publicly.

The change is part of the government’s move to improve corporate transparency.

Under the rules, beneficial owners or individuals with significant control are those who own, control or direct at least 25 per cent of shares of a corporation either individually or jointly with other individuals.

Food industry groups object to proposed B.C. chicken price increase

Several food industry groups are raising the alarm about a potential increase in the farm-level price of chicken in British Columbia, saying it could put pressure on businesses and consumers.

A house fire in Indiana has killed 5 children and injured another

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Fire tore through a house in northern Indiana, killing five children and leaving a sixth in treatment Monday for burns.

People, including children, were trapped by flames on the second floor Sunday evening, the South Bend Fire Department said.

Five children were pronounced dead. The sixth was taken to a hospital and later airlifted to one in Indianapolis.

California State University faculty launch weeklong strike across 23 campuses

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California State university faculty members reached a tentative contract agreement Monday, the same day that nearly 30,000 professors, librarians, coaches and other workers struck at the nation’s largest public university system, their union announced.

Federal officials recommend that airlines inspect door plugs on some older Boeing jets as well

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration recommends that airlines inspect the door plugs on certain Boeing 737s that are older than the Max 9 jetliner that suffered a blowout of a similar panel during a flight this month.

The FAA said door plugs on one older version of the 737, called the 737-900ER, are identical in design to those on the Max 9, and some airlines “have noted findings with bolts during the maintenance inspections.”
