Vandalism probe opened after swastika painted on Philadelphia wall adjacent to Holocaust memorial

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police have opened a vandalism investigation into the spray-painting of a swastika on a wall adjacent to a Holocaust memorial in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Authorities say the symbol, measuring about two feet by two feet and scrawled with green spray-paint, was reported Sunday on the wall adjacent to the Horowitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza next to the Ben Franklin Parkway a few blocks away from City Hall.

Canadians in several provinces to receive carbon price rebates today

Canadians living in provinces where the federal carbon price is collected are expected to receive their first Climate Action Incentive rebate of the year today.

The federal government says people living in provinces including Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan will receive the rebate through direct bank deposit or by cheque if they have filed their income tax and benefit returns.

Ottawa has said the payments are calculated based on the number of adults and children in the household.

Province invests nearly $2M to help prevent hate crimes in Ontario

The provincial government announced that it’s investing nearly $2 million to help combat an increase in hate crimes being experienced across Ontario.

Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said $1.7 million will be delivered over two years through the Safer and Vital Communities Grant program as part of the province’s plan to promote safe and inclusive communities.

Police probe first homicide on 2024 in Laval, just north of Montreal

LAVAL, Que. — Laval police say the fatal stabbing of a man early Monday in a residential neighbourhood is the first homicide of 2024 in the city north of Montreal.

Police received a 911 call at about 3:30 a.m. for a 66-year-old man who had been stabbed in a residence in the Laval-des-Rapides district.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the victim, but his death was confirmed at a local hospital.

Arakan Army resistance force says it has taken control of a strategic township in western Myanmar

BANGKOK (AP) — A powerful ethnic armed group fighting Myanmar’s military that is based in the country’s western state of Rakhine has seized a township bordering India and Bangladesh, the group declared Monday, confirming accounts by local residents and media.

Capital Power and OPG to assess use of small modular nuclear reactors in Alberta

Edmonton’s Capital Power Corp. and Ontario Power Generation are joining together to assess the feasibility of developing small modular nuclear reactors to help power Alberta’s electricity grid.

At an announcement Monday in Edmonton, the two companies said small modular reactors, or SMRs, will be critical in the years to come if Canada and Alberta are to meet growing demand for clean electricity.

They said the feasibility assessment will take two years to complete and will include exploring ownership and operating structures for a potential fleet of grid-scale SMRs
