Migrants’ rights group criticizes Cyprus authorities for not condemning bomb attack on its offices
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A migrants’ rights organization on Thursday criticized authorities in Cyprus for failing to speak out against an explosion that damaged its offices following threats against it by what it calls far-right and extremist groups.
Doros Polycarpou, who heads the Movement for Equality, Support, Anti-Racism nongovernmental organization, said a makeshift explosive device detonated before dawn Jan. 5 just outside his office, causing extensive damage.

Thomson Reuters makes bid for e-invoicing firm Pagero, tops offer by Vertex
TORONTO — Thomson Reuters Corp. is offering to buy Swedish company Pagero Group in a deal worth about $838 million, topping a bid for the e-invoicing firm by Vertex Inc.
The company says it’s offering 40 Swedish kronor in cash per Pagero share or a total of about 6.4 billion kronor.
Thomson Reuters says the proposal beats the offer announced by Vertex on Dec. 13 by four kronor per share.

UN concerned over Taliban arrests of Afghan women and girls for alleged Islamic headscarf violations
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The United Nations mission in Afghanistan said Thursday it was deeply concerned by recent arbitrary arrests and detentions by the Taliban government of women and girls for allegedly violating dress codes .
The mission said it was looking into claims of ill treatment of women and extortion in exchange for their release, and warned that physical violence and detentions were demeaning and dangerous.
The Taliban said last week that female police officers have been taking women into custody for wearing “bad hijab.”

Black Montreal theatre performer files defamation suit after puppet called racist
MONTREAL — A Black Montreal theatre performer has filed a lawsuit against an anti-racism activist who he says falsely associated him with racism against Black people.
Franck Sylvestre agues in the suit filed at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday that Alain Babineau made unreasonable claims about a puppet in a theatre piece Sylvestre created for children, damaging his career.
Babineau “unreasonably associated the plaintiff and his puppet with racism, with the submission of Black people to white people and even white supremacism and the dehumanization of Black people,” the lawsuit reads
Toronto doesn’t have the slowest traffic in the world, but it’s close: report
Toronto’s traffic jams are world-class, but it could be worse, according to a recent report measuring slow-moving traffic in metropolitan areas around the globe.
A new study from satellite navigation firm TomTom finds Toronto is the third slowest city in the world for drivers by average travel time (full list below).
The study looked at the average time it took drivers in each city to travel 10 kilometres in 2023. According to the firm, it usually takes drivers around 29 minutes

Driver, passengers run away after SUV strikes pole on Danforth: police
Police are searching for a group of people who ran away after a car crashed into multiple poles in Toronto’s Greektown neighbourhood on Thursday morning.
Emergency crews were called to Danforth Avenue near Carlaw Avenue around 4:45 a.m. for reports of a single-vehicle collision.
Police tell CityNews the vehicle struck poles and took down a traffic light at the intersection. Three adult occupants, described as two males and a female all in black clothing, ran away after the crash.
No injuries have been reported
Cogeco Q1 profit down from year earlier, revenue also edged lower
MONTREAL — Cogeco Inc. reported its first-quarter profit fell compared with a year earlier as its revenue also edged lower.
The company reported a profit attributable to owners of the corporation of $34.5 million or $2.21 per diluted share for the quarter ended Nov. 30.
The result was down from a profit of $42.1 million or $2.67 per diluted share in the same period a year earlier.

Turkish police arrest 70 suspects with ties to the Islamic State group in raids across the country
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish police detained 70 suspects with ties to the militant Islamic State group in raids this week across the country, Turkey’s interior minister said Thursday.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on social media that large amounts of money, digital material and receipts for hawala banking transactions were also discovered in the raids. Hawala is an informal money transfer system that is traditionally used in some parts of the Muslim world.
