Microsoft thinks about future of work with Teams updates

Forward-looking: At the recent Microsoft Ignite event, the company highlighted how it's thinking about the evolving work environment by unveiling several important new additions to its Teams collaboration platform. What’s most interesting about these developments isn’t the functionality they bring—though that’s certainly valuable—but how they reflect bigger picture issues about the evolution of the workplace.

Having recently passed the six-month point since the COVID-19 pandemic started impacting workplace environments in a big way , and now headed

BlizzCon gets rescheduled as online-only event in February 2021

Editor's take: Blizzard has rescheduled its gaming convention after postponing the event earlier this year due to Covid-19 concerns. The virtual show won't be quite the same as the annual in-person event but it's better than nothing at all, right?

The convention is typically held over a two-day period in early November but back in May, Blizzard said the current health climate wouldn’t allow them to host the event this year. Blizzard head Saralyn Smith didn’t dismiss

We might see 4K/ray tracing PC specs for Cyberpunk 2077

Recap: Last week saw CD Projekt Red finally reveal the kind of PC setup we’ll need to play Cyberpunk 2077, and it was pretty surprising. For a game that looks stunning, the very modest recommended hardware left some people scratching their heads. But the company never said what framerates, resolutions, etc. these specs were targeting. That could soon change, though, with CDPR potentially releasing new specs for 4K and ray tracing options.

To recap, Cyberpunk 2077’s

Alleged Xperia Play 2 prototype reveals what could have become of Sony's PlayStation phone

In context: Hardcore Sony fans likely get all misty-eyed over the company's PlayStation Portable (PSP) and Vita gaming consoles, two formidable products that could rival Nintendo's handheld offerings at the time. In 2011, when smartphones were rapidly gaining popularity and power, Sony tinkered with the idea of a PlayStation-inspired Android smartphone called the Xperia Play that had dedicated PSP-like gaming buttons on its slide-out controller section. It saw limited success that forced Sony to abandon its sequel

Royole, maker of the first foldable phone, releases successor

Recap: Many people think that the first foldable phone to go on sale was Samsung's Galaxy Fold, but it wasn't. Chinese company Royole beat the tech giant to the punch when it launched the FlexPai last year. Being the first to market with a new technology isn't always a good thing, of course; the device was clunky, ugly, and the software struggled to adapt to the folding screen. Now, Royole has released a successor, which it promises is a lot better.

John Carmack and Todd Howard react to Microsoft buying Bethesda

A hot potato: News that Microsoft will buy ZeniMax for $7.5 billion, giving the Windows-maker control over massive IPs such as The Elder Scrolls, Doom, and Fallout, rocked the gaming industry. Opinions seem split as to whether this is a good or bad thing, but two people firmly in the former camp are John Carmack and Todd Howard.

By purchasing ZeniMax Media , Microsoft will bring Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane, Machine Games, Tango Gameworks, and more into its stable.

Facebook says it may have to stop operating in the EU amid new data transfer rules

The big picture: Facebook says it may be forced to pull the plug on its EU operations, after the Irish privacy watchdog gave it three weeks to stop all user data transfers to the US. The company explains it is "not threatening to withdraw from Europe," but it has taken the issue to court as it believes it has been unfairly targeted for a common practice among many American organizations operating in the region.

Last month, Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) sent Facebook a preliminary order to stop

Your Echo smart speakers may help Amazon build its Bluetooth-based 'Sidewalk' network

In context: Amazon's Sidewalk project was first announced back in the fall of 2019 as a way to improve the coverage of smart home devices in and around the homes of customers. Sidewalk piggybacks on some of your existing smart home device bandwidth using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on the 900 MHz spectrum to help connect your own, more remote devices, as well as those of your neighbors.

In other words, Sidewalk uses existing devices to help connect a broader, mesh-like network
