Sony cancels its PAX East plans due to coronavirus fears

What just happened? We've seen numerous tech companies pull out of major trade events and conferences over concerns related to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak, and that trend is continuing now. For better or worse, Sony has officially announced its decision to withdraw its plans to participate in this year's annual PAX East conference in Boston, citing a desire to protect the "health and safety" of its global workforce.

Though the coronavirus has spread to the US, the number of total cases

Scientists develop low-cost solution that generates electricity from air

Why it matters: Scientists from the University of Massachusetts Amherst have created a device capable of generating electricity from the water vapor that is naturally present in the atmosphere. This could be a true game-changer, especially with regard to powering wireless electronics.

The device, coined the “Air-gen,” traces its roots back more than three decades to the muddy shores of the Potomac River. There, scientists discovered an unusual microbe belonging to the Geobacter genus that, among other things, could produce magnetite without oxygen.

In brief: Tough times call for tough measures and that is exactly where Groupon is right now. Share value in the online marketplace is down more than 42 percent in early morning trading after announcing disappointing fourth quarter and full year earnings yesterday afternoon.

The company isn’t blind to the fact, either, and is making changes to right the ship before it is too late.

Researchers show how to trick a Tesla into speeding using a piece of tape

Why it matters: While many modern vehicles contain incredibly advanced technology, it’s not infallible. The MobilEye EyeQ3 camera system installed on certain Tesla models, for example, can be tricked into accelerating the car up to 50 mph over the speed limit using a simple piece of tape.

McAfee researchers Steve Povolny and Shivangee Trivedi fooled the system by placing a slither of black tape over part of a 35mph sign to extend the middle line of the ‘3.’ It meant the cameras in Tesla’

Elon Musk: Advanced AI development should be regulated, including Tesla

Why it matters: While many companies are scrambling to infuse AI into every industry, Elon Musk is once again floating the idea that we need more government oversight of AI development. His comments come in response to a profile of OpenAI, a company that's ironically among the least open and transparent about its work.

During the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai last year, Elon Musk expressed both his enthusiasm with regards to the potential rewards of AI, as well as concerns about the risks of using it before we get
