Two Chinese nationals arrested in the U.S. over GPU smuggling worth 'tens of millions of dollars' — over 20 shipments of AI chips and numerous illicit payments tracked

The U.S. Department of Justice has arrested two Chinese nationals on a federal criminal complaint that alleges they exported AI GPUs worth tens of millions of dollars to China in exchange for cash. Chuan Geng, 28, of Pasadena, and Shiwei Yang, 28, of El Monte, face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, according to the DoJ .

The PCI-SIG consortium has officially announced the development of the PCI Express 8.0 specification. This new version is set to double data transfer rate to 256 GT/s per lane. In addition to the extra bandwidth, PCIe Gen8 is said to feature protocol enhancements to increase real-world bandwidth and reduce power consumption.

Huawei is making its Ascend AI GPU software toolkit open-source to better compete against CUDA

Huawei has greenlit a plan to open-source its CANN software toolkit for its Ascend AI GPUs. According to the South China Morning Post , Huawei is making this move in order to better compete against Nvidia and its closed-source CUDA software ecosystem.
