MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z “solder joint gate”

Reviewer explains why his RTX 5090 has “missing” solder on the power connector.

Igor´sLAB has published a technical breakdown of the “solder joint gate” discussion around MSI’s NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z. The debate started after close-up photos showed uneven through-hole solder joints around the card’s 12V 2×6 auxiliary power connector area.

The core point is that appearance alone does not prove an electrical defect. In the examples he discusses, two of the images show irregular-looking solder on ground pins. Igor argues this is often less risky than it looks because return current can also flow through the PCIe slot ground contacts, and because the connector itself has multiple parallel ground paths.

Unlike ground, a 12V pin is part of the direct supply path feeding the GPU, so uneven wetting or higher resistance on one pin could, in theory, shift more load onto the remaining parallel pins over time. That does not automatically create instability, but it can raise concerns about long-term thermal and mechanical stress if the joint is genuinely underfilled inside the via.

Igor’sLAB’s unit was not the only RTX 5090 Lightning card with a similar issue. However, the exact number of affected cards is unclear because most reviewers did not remove the cooler to inspect the PCB.

One point raised in the discussion is that the RTX 5090 Lightning Z appears to be produced in smaller, limited-run batches, which can lead to more variation in assembly quality. Even so, at a $5,090 MSRP, buyers expect the card to arrive looking clean and consistent.

Users should not remove the cooler just to inspect the power connector solder joints. If there are real defects or reliability issues, MSI should handle them under warranty or service. Also, the load is distributed across two power connectors, so it would be unusual for minor visual irregularities to translate into immediate functional problems. In other words, there’s probably nothing to worry about.
