Thermal Grizzly prototypes a glass window for its DeltaMate RTX 5090 Astral GPU block, pressure-tested to 5 bar

DeltaMate glass-window RTX 5090 Astral block hits 5 bar in der8auer pressure test

Thermal Grizzly says it is still working on a glass-window version of its DeltaMate GPU water block for the ASUS ROG GeForce RTX 5090 Astral , after shipping the first release with an acrylic (PMMA) window. The company’s stated goal is a window material that is less prone to scratches and less affected by long-term aging than acrylic.

Roman Hartung says you cannot just take the current DeltaMate block and replace the acrylic window with glass. Early glass prototypes cracked, so Thermal Grizzly had to change the design of the block. That included changes to both the copper part and the matching aluminum part.

Because of those changes, the glass version uses different parts and does not fit the current acrylic version. If you already own the acrylic block, you should not expect an upgrade kit to swap in glass.

The video focuses on pressure testing in a water bath using water as the test medium, to reduce risk compared to compressed air. Hardwareluxx reports that Thermal Grizzly typically pressure-tests its water blocks at 0.6 bar, while DeltaMate products are tested at 1 bar.

In the pressure test, the acrylic window lasted until about 9 bar before it failed. The glass window prototype failed at about 5 bar. That difference comes down to how the materials behave. Acrylic bends more when pressure builds up, so it can take higher pressure before it breaks. Glass bends less, so it stays rigid, but once it reaches its limit it cracks sooner.

It all comes down to stiffness numbers: acrylic is around 3 GPa, while glass is around 70 GPa. Higher means stiffer. That is why glass resists bending but is more prone to cracking once stressed.

Thermal Grizzly also used the video to show an upcoming DeltaMate MP II CPU cooler, which has a much smaller window area and reportedly withstood 10 bar in the same style of test. Thermal Grizzly has previously referred to a DeltaMate “Mycro Pro II” CPU block as part of the broader DeltaMate lineup, which lines up with the MP II naming.

According to Der8auer, DeltaMate GPU block variant for the ASUS ROG GeForce RTX 5080 Astral is already in production, with additional variants planned for the ASUS ROG GeForce RTX 5090 Matrix and the MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z.
