Report links memory squeeze to possible 2028-2029 next PlayStation shift

A new report from Bloomberg says Sony is considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029, citing people familiar with the company’s thinking. The report links the timing discussion to rising component costs and tighter supply for memory parts.
The PlayStation 6 console is a new project between AMD and Sony, presumably featuring features from upcoming RDNA5 architecture. The system was recently mentioned to feature 30GB of combined system memory, while Sony is reportedly also planning a PlayStation handheld that could feature 24GB memory instead.

Nintendo has previously signaled that external cost shocks could change its hardware economics. In a November 2025 investor Q&A, Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo expected to keep hardware profitability at its current level for the time being, but he flagged factors like tariff assumptions and other unexpected events as variables.
Close rival Nintendo Co., which contributed to the surplus demand in 2025 after its new Switch 2 console drove storage card purchases, is also contemplating raising the price of that device in 2026, people familiar with its plans said. Sony and Nintendo representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment.
