User claims Ryzen 9800X3D died on ASUS X870 board, then it “killed” the replacement 9850X3D too

A user in Australia says two Ryzen X3D processors failed within weeks on the same ASUS TUF X870-P WIFI motherboard, after a period of intermittent freezes and boot-time lockups. Redditor “UniverseWillDecide” says their first build paired the board with a Ryzen 9800X3D, which ran normally for about a week before the system began freezing while idle or during Windows startup.

They report that an OCCT memory test passed, but stability issues appeared during AVX2-heavy testing. The user returned the CPU through Amazon while still inside the retailer’s return window, then rebuilt the system with a Ryzen 9850X3D they say they bought at launch locally.

The same post claims the replacement CPU also stopped working after a few weeks of use. The user says they are not directly blaming AMD, but suspects firmware behavior, specifically motherboard BIOS voltage settings, may be a factor. They also mention owning an ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 5090, and say they bought into the TUF lineup expecting long-term reliability.

The report lands after ASUS publicly addressed earlier Ryzen 9800X3D-related complaints involving its AMD 800-series motherboards. In a January 23, 2026 statement, ASUS said it was aware of the reports and had started an internal review, including compatibility and performance checks in cooperation with AMD. ASUS also advised owners to update to the latest BIOS using EZ Flash or BIOS Flashback, and told affected customers to contact support. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any update since.

ASUS was not the only brand affected by a surge of dead Ryzen CPUs. ASRock appears to have been hit harder, based on the number of reports on Reddit alone. Unlike ASUS though, ASRock has released firmware updates , saying they may bring CPUs that had trouble booting back to life. That likely will not help CPUs that are already dead and also fail to work on other motherboards.
