RTX 5090 “dual 16-pin” power mods are back in the spotlight after UNIKO’s Hardware shared video clips showing a card that reportedly died only days after a second connector was added by Frame Chasers to the RTX 5090 Gigabyte Aorus Master .

This kind of mod is used by extreme overclockers. It involves adding a second 12V-2×6 (16-pin) connector to boards that already have an unpopulated PCB footprint for it. As far as we know, this may be possible on some Gigabyte RTX 5090 models because the company uses the same PCB across variants, with or without the secondary connector fitted. First, we would not encourage anyone to attempt this without proper tools, measurement equipment, and experience. Even if the mod appears to work at first, it can introduce new failure points that are difficult to diagnose once instability starts. In this case, the card reportedly functioned for a short time before failing. However, it is also worth noting that Frame Chasers said the card was already showing issues before the connector work was done.

The card has now been sent to Northwest Repair for assessment. In the video, the PCB already appears to have a hole. Before it shipped, it looked like a capacitor had blown out.

The service center has not shared any details on what caused the card’s sudden failure. Frame Chasers said they believe it may have been related to the use of a heat gun during the soldering process.
