All thanks to Valve engineer

Linux 7.0 is getting its first round of post feature fixes for graphics drivers, and a large share of them are for AMDGPU. The patch set was reported yesterday, as part of the normal DRM fix process that follows the bigger feature merges earlier in the release cycle.
What stands out is that a lot of this work targets older Radeon cards, including AMD Graphics Core Next 1.0 and 1.1 hardware. These GPUs are well over a decade old now. Many users have moved on. Still, the Linux kernel is getting real fixes for them, and much of that comes down to ongoing effort from Valve engineer Timur Kristóf. He has been pushing to improve the AMDGPU driver path for early GCN parts and cleaning up loose ends, including some APU related issues, after the move away from the legacy Radeon driver in many configurations.
One of the practical fixes is for a black screen problem tied to analog output when using AMDGPU DC display code, with Radeon HD 7790 mentioned as an example. The patch set also tries to make analog connector handling behave more like the rest of the connector stack, so older VGA style setups do not feel like second-class support.

There is also a separate AMDGPU fix aimed at older Apple MacBook systems with switchable graphics. The report says the change keeps VGA memory around and adjusts dGPU virtual address handling to fix cursor flicker and driver errors seen with GNOME on Wayland on systems using GPUs like the Radeon Pro 560. That work is credited to AMD’s Alex Deucher.
Even if the number of people gaming on early GCN cards in 2026 is low, this kind of maintenance still matters. It keeps older PCs useful for basic desktop and media tasks. It helps schools, labs, and hobbyists running hand-me-down hardware. It also reduces e-waste by extending the usable life of machines that still work.
