RetroDECK drops Switch emulator component after legal risk concerns
RetroDECK, a Linux retro-gaming bundle delivered as a Flatpak, says it will r emove all Nintendo Switch emulation support in an upcoming minor update. The project is aimed at handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck, plus Linux desktops and HTPC setups, and it ships a preconfigured front end and multiple emulators in one install.
RetroDECK team said Switch emulation created the most support burden across the project, including warnings, bans, toxicity, and support tickets. The post also says the DMCA status around Switch emulators creates legal exposure the volunteer-run project is not willing to take on, and it calls the decision “final.”
RetroDECK also said Switch emulation discussion is no longer allowed across its social platforms, effective immediately. Users who still want Switch emulation will need to add it manually as an unsupported component, and RetroDECK says it will not remove existing games or save data from user systems.
We would also like to note that the DMCA status of these emulators creates a level of legal exposure and implied responsibility that we are neither willing nor able to assume. RetroDECK is a volunteer-driven project, and we will not place the team or the broader community at risk by maintaining features that could subject us to takedowns, legal threats, or compliance burdens beyond our scope.
Accordingly, in an upcoming minor update, all Switch emulation support will be permanently removed from RetroDECK forever.
Nintendo steps up emulator takedowns
The move lands during a multi-year legal and takedown push by Nintendo against modern-console emulation, centered on Switch. In March 2024, Switch emulator Yuzu agreed to a settlement that ended development, and the same announcement said 3DS emulator Citra support would also be discontinued.
Later in 2024, Switch emulator Ryujinx also went offline after its developers said they were contacted by Nintendo and accepted an agreement to stop work. In parallel, Nintendo also used DMCA takedowns against code hosting, including a May 2024 wave that targeted thousands of Yuzu fork repositories on GitHub, plus a March 2024 takedown that removed Yuzu fork Suyu from GitLab.
Notable emulator projects impacted by Nintendo-related takedowns
