Dell bolts down 12V-2×6 GPU power connector in Tower Plus EBT2250

A Japanese teardown and review of Dell’s Tower Plus EBT2250 by Chimolog shows an unusual approach to GPU power delivery. Instead of relying on a standard 12V-2×6 plug that can be disturbed during shipping or servicing, the system uses hardware to mechanically fix the connector in place so it cannot back out.

The EBT2250’s 12V-2×6 connector is secured using genuine fittings from Amphenol , with the explicit goal of preventing accidental loosening. This sits alongside other physical measures in the same build, including a dedicated GPU support bracket meant to reduce long-term sag and movement. Since the connector is angled, this also means no issues with limited space for cable bending, which is usually recommened at around 35mm for 16-pin power cables.

In the tested configuration, the system pairs an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K with an RTX 5070 Ti 16GB, 32 GB of DDR5-5600 memory, and an Intel Z890 motherboard.

As we recall, user error was cited as the reason for RTX 40 era melting cases. NVIDIA introduced the updated 12V-2×6 design as the successor to 12VHPWR in the PCIe CEM 5.1 ecosystem. Failures that involve overheating are commonly associated with poor contact conditions that raise resistance at the connection point, which increases heat at the contact and can cascade into thermal runaway in worst cases.
Dell’s approach does not change the electrical interface, but it is a direct attempt to reduce the chance of the connector shifting after installation. Also, these commercial-focused systems are not really designed to be opened and for protection foam to be removed like in some gaming prebuilts. So the less maintenance out of the box, the better. Still, kind of interesting that we got bolting connectors down to the card.
