Yeston’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE Sakura “Waifu” reviewed, China-exclusive model

Gamers Nexus tests the China-exclusive RX 9070 GRE

A new round of testing has put the Yeston Sakura-themed “Waifu” version of AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE back in the spotlight. The card is built around a model that has so far been sold in China, and the specific unit tested is one of Yeston’s decorative Sakura variants rather than a reference-style partner design.

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is a China-exclusive SKU. It occupies the performance gap between the Radeon RX 9070 and the RX 9060 XT within the RDNA 4 architecture. AMD uses the “GRE” branding for products targeted at specific geographic regions.

AMD has not announced plans to release this model globally. Previous GRE releases follow inconsistent patterns. The RX 7900 GRE eventually reached global markets but models like RX 6750 GRE remained restricted to the Chinese market.

Specs reported for RX 9070 GRE variants cluster around 48 compute units, which maps to 3,072 stream processors, paired with 12GB of GDDR6 on a 192-bit bus. Typical figures cited for the card include boost clocks around 2.79GHz and a 220W class board power, depending on board partner BIOS and tuning.

In the published test results, the Yeston Sakura card ran with an aggressive GPU temperature target, landing around the high 60s Celsius under load, while hotspot behavior showed a larger-than-ideal delta versus average GPU temperature. Noise levels were reported as low at the tested automatic fan behavior, helped by a cooler that looks sized for more than a 220W load. The board also includes quality-of-life switches such as dual BIOS and lighting control.

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE performs below the Radeon RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT. Performance results are not at the RTX 5070 level, the NVIDIA GPU is faster in most benchmarks. The GRE model features similar memory capacity to the RTX 5070 but serves as a performance alternative to the RTX 5060 Ti.

As Gamers Nexus has put it, current pricing fluctuations make direct SKU-to-SKU comparisons difficult right now. This is likely why we have not heard anything from AMD about a potential global launch of the GRE.
