Shunt-modded RTX 5090 triggers WireView Pro II temperature alarms
© Overclock.net “Vinz”, an user on Overclock forums has reported a melted connector on a Thermal Grizzly WireView unit after running a heavily modified GeForce RTX 5090 setup. The ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 was shunt-modded and paired with an XOC-class BIOS and sustained high-power testing.
The WireView was issuing repeated temperature alarms during gaming and benchmarks. The user says the device reported 124°C on the “IN” side, described as the PSU-to-WireView side, while the “OUT” side on the GPU-facing side read around 42°C. The user assumed the WireView sensor was incorrect because the ROG Astral’s own pin monitoring looked normal and the adapter housing felt cool to the touch. There are consequences because the user did not trust German engineering.
The next day, the user noticed the connector had burned and also said it was difficult to remove the cable from the WireView. The report claims the damage was limited to the external connector area on the WireView side, and that the GPU’s power socket and the PSU-side connectors were not visibly damaged.
© Overclock.net After the incident, the user switched back to the original 4×8-pin to 12VHPWR adapter and re-tested. They report WireView temperatures in the low-to-mid 40°C range during a 1200W session after about 10 minutes of load, and he is now debating whether to replace the WireView due to visible connector wear.
WireView Pro 2 offers extended warranty, but won’t cover modified GPUs
This type of configuration is outside normal operating conditions. Shunt mods and third-party or XOC BIOS flashing can raise power limits well beyond stock behavior, and it can void warranty coverage from board partners and vendors. It also increases risk around the 12VHPWR connection if any part of the chain has higher resistance, poor seating, or sustained heat at the contact area.
© Thermal Grizzly Thermal Grizzly describes the WireView GPU Pro as a monitoring tool with temperature sensors and an audible alarm, but it does not guarantee protection against connector damage if a system continues running through alerts. In this case, the user ignored repeated warnings, and the setup was also modified, which increases risk and typically falls outside warranty coverage.
