Micron introduces 24Gb GDDR7 memory rated up to 36 Gb/s for next-generation GPUs

While we did not get an RTX 50 SUPER series with the rumored 3GB memory modules, but this type of memory is already shipping at scale. NVIDIA has used 3GB GDDR7 chips on the GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU and the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell , so it is not as if the memory does not exist. What does not exist is a healthy supply at a reasonable price. This is likely one reason we did not see new NVIDIA cards at CES.

The graphics memory market is not slowing down, it is expanding. Micron is the latest vendor to officially announce GDDR7 memory with 24Gb (3GB) density. Micron also says its chips will reach up to 36 Gb/s, a data rate not used by any current GPU. At that speed, a 512-bit interface could exceed 2 TB/s of total memory bandwidth, assuming there are no artificial limits in place.

On desktop, the largest GDDR7 configuration today is NVIDIA’s RTX PRO 6000, which ships with 96GB of GDDR7 using 3GB chips. Those modules run at 28 Gb/s, and the card is rated for 1.8 TB/s of total bandwidth. At 36 Gbps, that would give us 2.3 TB/s, but the capacity would remain the same.

It is also fair to question how relevant this is for consumer GPUs right now. NVIDIA does not appear to be planning an RTX 50 SUPER refresh anytime soon, possibly ever, and memory pricing and supply remain a factor. However, higher-density GDDR7 may end up being more important for next-generation GeForce and Radeon products, where vendors can raise VRAM capacity while keeping mainstream bus widths like 128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit.
