Bartlett Lake-S on consume Z790 board, BIOS support remains the question

We have been hearing about the Bartlett Lake-S series for quite some time, and the rumors were interesting for two reasons. First, Bartlett is said to be Intel’s new P-core-only design with up to 12 cores. This would be a change from Alder Lake and Raptor Lake, which topped out at eight P-cores paired with E-cores. Bartlett Lake-S is expected to drop E-cores entirely. The second point is the potential lifespan extension for the otherwise abandoned LGA-1700 platform.

A photo shared by @wnod appears to show an Intel Core 9 273PQE “Bartlett Lake-S” entry on an ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Apex platform (and before you ask, yes, it took some time to match the board). As we know Apex is an enthusiast board designed around high-end memory tuning and overclocking, not an edge or embedded validation setup.

It is worth saying that seeing a CPU name show up in a screenshot does not confirm the processor boots, runs stable, or is fully supported. LGA-1700 mechanical compatibility is only part of the story. Real support still depends on BIOS updates, microcode, and vendor validation, and those pieces have been inconsistent around Bartlett Lake-S so far.

We recently covered Jaykihn’s Bartlett Lake-S specifications list, which positioned these P-core-only parts as Intel Core 200E series products for edge and embedded rather than a mainstream desktop refresh. The Core 9 273PQE is part of that lineup and is described as a 12-core, 24-thread CPU with 36 MB of L3 cache and up to 5.9 GHz max turbo, rated at 125 W base power in the leaked table.

If the “273PQE on Apex” sighting is legitimate, a likely explanation is a special BIOS build intended for internal validation or for overclocking-focused partners. A P-core-only LGA-1700 CPU with high turbo clocks would naturally draw attention from the overclocking community, even if Intel’s commercial intent stays outside retail. Also, let’s remind you that ASRock explicitly said they won’t support it on consumer boards.

So do not get your hopes up yet, but someone will likely get these CPUs running eventually, and modders and overclockers will probably take interest. What I do not understand is why Intel went through the trouble of making new silicon and then kept it limited to edge systems. That is likely a business decision rather than a technical one.
