Sony says upgraded PSSR will be selectable for any PSSR-supported PS5 Pro game

Sony has confirmed an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players “in the coming weeks,” according to a PlayStation Blog post by PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny.
PSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling library that analyzes images pixel by pixel during upscaling. Sony says it has already been used to increase the effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles to date.
The new PSSR update changes both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Sony says Resident Evil Requiem, launching today, is the first game to ship with the upgraded PSSR, with Capcom highlighting improved handling of fine details such as hair and other intricate textures that can be difficult to upscale cleanly.

Sony also confirmed the upgraded PSSR is derived from its Project Amethyst partnership with AMD , linking it to the same collaboration behind AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling on PC. Sony says the PS5 Pro implementation includes an additional six months of refinement on top of the co-developed technology.
“With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player’s immersion in horror. For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. The way light passes through his hair changes depending on how the strands of hair are overlapped as well. This detailed expression of texture is one of the many details that we would especially love for our fans to see.
The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers.”

© SONY More details are expected in March. Sony says multiple existing games will be updated to use the improved PSSR, and a system software update will add an “ Enhance PSSR Image Quality ” toggle in PS5 Pro settings, which will apply the updated PSSR to any PS5 Pro title that already supports PSSR.
Grateful for the shared vision with @cerny on Project Amethyst.
🎮 Through deep co-engineering between @PlayStation and @AMD , we’re seeing that vision power the PlayStation 5 Pro, delivering higher resolution, higher frame rates, and beautiful visual fidelity for gamers.
