Orange Pi Neo handheld put “on ice” due to DDR5 and SSD pricing

Orange Pi Neo handheld delayed

Manjaro has posted a new development update stating the Orange Pi Neo handheld is “on ice.” The update cites high prices for DDR5 memory and SSDs as the reason for pausing the project, while adding that CE and FCC certifications are now complete.

The same post says work has continued on the software side, including “a lot of improvements around the Manjaro Gaming Edition.” Manjaro also says it is “ waiting for a good time to launch the product, ” but it does not provide a revised release window.

This is a major shift from earlier messaging in the same development thread, which previously targeted an H1 2026 release. The device is still presented as a Ryzen 7 7840U-based handheld in Manjaro’s public materials.

Based on the published specs page, Orange Pi Neo is listed with a 7-inch 1920×1200 120 Hz display, 16 GB or 32 GB LPDDR5-6400 memory, and 512 GB to 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. In fact, we even had a price announced, but judging from the update, it will never go on sale at this price. The forum thread also previously listed target pricing of $450 for a 7840U 16 GB/512 GB model, and $550 for an 8840U 32 GB/512 GB model.

Manjaro does not describe the pause as a cancellation, but “on ice” with no updated timeline usually means the launch is not close. The choice of Ryzen 7 7840U also dates the platform, this architecture launch in May 2023. If the project remains paused much longer, the original configuration may need a refresh to stay current when and if it returns.
