A Redditor says Silicon Power reduced their RMA refund for a defective memory kit by applying a 15% “depreciation fee.” The post, shared on Pcmasterrace, claims the user expected a like-for-like replacement but received a reduced refund instead.

According to the user, the kit was purchased for $54.97 and Silicon Power’s message listed a refund of $46.72. That difference matches a 15% deduction from the original purchase price. The user also claims the same kit now lists for $140.97, which would make the refund insufficient to buy a replacement at today’s pricing.

The post says the user returned the full kit as part of the RMA, including a stick they believed was still functional. User claim the failure caused system instability and file corruption (and shared PassMark test confirming that).

Silicon Power’s own policy language leaves room for outcomes other than a straight replacement. The company says that if a product is confirmed defective under its limited warranty, remedies can include replacement, a full refund, or a partial refund of the original purchase price, and it adds that refund amounts can depend on factors such as product availability and length of use.

The same policy page also describes a 15% restocking fee for certain returns, but it frames that fee around opened items that were not received in defective or damaged condition. It is possible there was a mistake, or Silicon Power treated the defective memory as a standard return regardless of whether the modules were working.

As the Reddit user noted, the current price for the same kit is now much higher. If a depreciation fee is applied, it would make more sense for it to be calculated against current market value so the customer still has the option to purchase a replacement. Instead, the user received only about one third of the current market price for the same kit, and you can’t buy anything for that, perhaps maybe a dummy RGB memory kit for lighting.
