AMD Ryzen AI 400 does not support Radeon RX 9000 GPUs at full PCIe speed

AMD confirms Ryzen AI 400G desktop APUs offer up to 12 usable PCIe 4.0 lanes

Last week, AMD announced the Ryzen AI PRO 400 series for laptops and desktops, along with the Ryzen AI 400 series for desktops. These are Zen 5-based processors positioned as successors to the Ryzen 8000G series, budget-focused APUs with integrated graphics. AMD has not clearly communicated which models are launching and what the final specifications are.

AMD has now listed the full desktop Ryzen AI 400 lineup with detailed specifications. The pages show that the Ryzen AI 400G and Ryzen AI PRO 400G series have a lower native PCIe lane budget than Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs. The top SKU, Ryzen AI 7 450G, is listed with 16 native PCIe lanes total, with 12 usable . The Ryzen AI 5 435G is listed with 14 lanes total, with 10 usable.

Both parts list PCIe 4.0 for the CPU’s PCIe interface. On AM5, some CPU lanes are reserved for the chipset link. That leaves fewer direct lanes for add-in devices than Ryzen 8000G on higher-end models.

In practice, 12 usable lanes is enough for a PCIe x8 graphics slot plus a PCIe x4 NVMe slot. It also limits direct CPU lanes for additional storage or other high-bandwidth devices. The 10-lane configuration usually forces more compromises, depending on how the motherboard vendor routes lanes and how much connectivity is provided by the chipset.

This also means Ryzen AI 400 for the AM5 socket will not run a Radeon RX 9000 series graphics card at its full PCIe link width. Gorgon Point on AM5 is limited to PCIe 4.0, and the desktop parts top out at 12 usable lanes. By comparison, even the Radeon RX 9060 XT is specified as PCIe 5.0 x16, although the card can operate on older PCIe versions.

At 4.0×8 spec, you are essentially given the same bandwidth as a 3.0×16 slot, and how much does that impact performance? Well, quite a lot actually. In HardwareUnboxed testing, it showed a 30%+ performance loss depending on the game and settings.

Ryzen G-Series are not designed for discrete graphics, but…

Ryzen G-series parts are not designed around discrete graphics. Still, system integrators often pair them with entry-level or mid-range GPUs in budget builds. In those configurations, an RX 9000-series card will run with reduced PCIe bandwidth compared to a standard Ryzen desktop CPU.
