Helldivers 2 “Slim” build becomes standard on Steam from March 17

Arrowhead Game Studios says Helldivers 2 will remove its optional “large” PC build from Steam with the game’s next patch on March 17, 2026. The studio said weeks of feedback and stress testing during the recent “Machinery of Oppression” update showed that players were having a good experience on the smaller “slim” build.
The “slim” build first appeared as an opt-in technical beta and cut the game’s install size from about 154GB to 23GB . That is a reduction of roughly 131GB, or around 85%. Arrowhead said the change came from removing duplicated data that had previously been kept in the PC build.
Helldivers 2 Large Build Delist
Greetings Helldivers
After extensive testing of our “slim” build (for more details on this history of this topic see here and here), weeks of your input and stress testing including a great influx of new and returning players in the ‘Machinery of Oppression’ major update, we are confident that players are having a great experience playing HELLDIVERS 2 on the smaller build. As a result we will be removing the “large” build from Steam inline with our next patch – 17th March 2026.
Thank you for your continued support.
According to Arrowhead, that duplicated data was originally meant to help players using mechanical hard drives. Later testing showed the benefit was limited, because much of the game’s loading time came from map generation rather than storage reads. The studio also said only around 11% of active players were still using an HDD during the period covered by its analysis.
With the March 17 patch, the smaller build will effectively become the standard option for PC players on Steam. For Helldivers 2 users, this means a much smaller download and update footprint, without the need to keep a legacy install option around.
