NVIDIA reportedly resumes GeForce RTX 3060 production at Samsung
According to Hankyung, Samsung Foundry is set to restart production of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060, bringing the Ampere GPU back roughly two years after output was said to have ended. The report says Samsung will once again use its 8nm process, the same node used for the original launch period of the card. This is a follow-up to recent rumors from China that NVIDIA is planning to bring more RTX 3060 cards to the market this quarter.
The GeForce RTX 3060 launched in 2021 and remains one of NVIDIA’s better known mainstream Ampere models. This mid-range model featured 3,584 CUDA cores and up to 12GB of GDDR6 memory, which is part of why the model has remained relevant longer than many mid-range cards from the same period. Hankyung says shipments declined after NVIDIA moved the GeForce RTX 40 series to TSMC in late 2022, with RTX 3060 production later discontinued in 2024.
According to the semiconductor industry on the 8th, Samsung Electronics’ foundry division will soon begin producing the older GPU, the RTX 3060, using the 8-nanometer process. GPUs were previously used to render images in PCs and game consoles, but are now being used as core components in AI accelerators (semiconductor packages specialized for AI). The RTX 3060 is a GPU that NVIDIA introduced in 2021, and was produced by Samsung Electronics using the 8-nanometer process at the time.

Hankyung ties the reported restart to tighter limits around advanced AI chips and NVIDIA’s position in China. The report says NVIDIA is looking at older GPUs as an alternative sales path where top-end AI accelerators face export barriers. Reuters reported on March 5 that U.S. officials are discussing a new framework for AI chip exports, adding more uncertainty around how these products can be shipped abroad.

It’s worth remembering that Jensen Huang said at CES 2026 that bringing back older graphics cards was “a good idea” when asked about easing pressure on the gaming market. This does not confirm the RTX 3060 restart on its own, but it does line up with the direction described in the Hankyung report.
