Microsoft turns Xbox Full Screen Experience into Xbox Mode

Microsoft has announced Xbox mode for Windows 11, a new full-screen, controller-optimized gaming interface that begins rolling out in April in select markets. The company says the feature brings what it learned from building a gaming-focused operating system directly into Windows, while still allowing users to switch between productivity and play.
According to Microsoft, Xbox mode delivers a familiar Xbox-style experience on top of Windows 11 rather than replacing Windows itself. The company says the feature is meant to preserve the openness of the PC platform, including support for other storefronts, while making Windows easier to use from a controller-first interface.
Xbox mode is effectively the broader Windows 11 rollout of the Xbox Full Screen Experience preview that has been available since November 2025 for users enrolled in both the Windows Insider and Xbox Insider programs. Microsoft is now bringing the interface to laptops, desktops, and tablets, and has renamed it from Xbox Full Screen Experience, or FSE, to Xbox mode.
We’re taking everything we’ve learned about building a leading gaming OS and bringing it directly into Windows for both players and developers. After debuting an early version with the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, today I’m excited to share that we are bringing the same innovation to Windows 11 with Xbox mode that begins rolling out in April, starting with select markets. Xbox mode lets players seamlessly switch between productivity and play, with a familiar full screen and controller optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows.

At Microsoft’s GDC session led by Jason Ronald (Microsoft VP), Microsoft confirmed it is continuing to move Xbox and Windows closer together, with Ronald saying PC is becoming an increasingly important part of Xbox. They also noted Microsoft’s push for a unified development model, including messaging at the event that told developers to “Build for Xbox on PC.”

The announcement also adds more context to Project Helix , Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox platform powered by AMD SoC, which Microsoft confirmed will not reach alpha with developers until 2027. While Helix remains a future product, Xbox mode shows Microsoft is already moving the current Windows PC experience closer to Xbox.
