NVIDIA says future GPUs will target 1,000,000x path tracing uplift over Pascal

NVIDIA says Moore’s Law is no longer enough for the next graphics jump

At GDC 2026, NVIDIA used John Spitzer’s RTX presentation to explain a long-term rendering roadmap rather than announce a new gaming GPU. The company said current Blackwell graphics cards already deliver a 10,000x path tracing gain over Pascal, and that future architectures are aiming for a 1,000,000x improvement against that same 2016 baseline.

Obviously this comparison makes no sense, because Pascal predates dedicated RT cores, Tensor cores, and DLSS, so this is not a straight generational claim against Blackwell or Ada. It would be better to compare it to Turing at least. NVIDIA is stacking ten years of hardware changes, software work, and AI-assisted rendering into one comparison, which is why the company is presenting the number as a long-range roadmap target, not as a near-term product uplift.

“If you look at the performance there with just a software RT core to today, where we have fourth-generation RT cores, we have third-generation Tensor cores, we have DLSS 4.5, which is able to infer 23 out of 24 pixels rendered. These are multiplicative, that you can multiply them all together to get a scaling factor that, combined with the algorithm, eventually gave a 10,000 times that we’ve improved the performance over the last 10 years.”

Spitzer also said NVIDIA does not expect brute-force silicon gains alone to close the gap to film-quality rendering. His argument was that “Moore’s Law is dead,” so the next step has to come from algorithmic work and heavier use of AI. In practice, that means more reliance on DLSS, neural rendering, better RT hardware, and path tracing techniques that reduce the amount of work the GPU needs to do per frame.

NVIDIA’s official GDC materials highlight ReSTIR PT for better glossy reflections and path reuse, a new RTX Mega Geometry foliage system for dense path-traced scenes, and ongoing work with CD PROJEKT RED on The Witcher 4 . NVIDIA also says DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X mode will arrive on March 31 for supported GeForce RTX 50 series workflows.

Therefore, the true lesson is not that NVIDIA promised a 100x jump from one GeForce generation to the next. The company is saying future path tracing progress will come from neural rendering, frame generation, smarter light transport, and more specialized RT tooling. I’m sure they will find a creative way to present the new figure. NVIDIA loves numbers, but hopefully this doesn’t mean similar trends in price hikes.
