MacBook Neo mod bypasses Apple’s 512GB storage cap
A Chinese repair technician DirectorFeng has upgraded Apple’s new MacBook Neo from 256GB to 1TB by replacing the onboard NAND package. Apple officially sells the MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, and either 256GB or 512GB of storage, so the mod goes beyond the company’s standard configuration options.
The process involved removing the original soldered NAND chip from the logic board, cleaning the pads, and installing a higher-capacity replacement with board-level repair tools. Once reassembled, macOS reportedly recognized the larger capacity.

We recently discussed the advantages of the Apple MacBook Neo compared to its Windows counterparts, and while price and performance may be adequate for this segment, Neo systems have one major disadvantage. Their memory and storage cannot be upgraded, at least not easily.
However, this is not a standard user upgrade. Apple uses soldered NAND rather than a removable SSD in the MacBook Neo, so any capacity change requires micro-soldering and would almost certainly void warranty coverage. Reports on the video also say the machine completed the mod without firmware issues, and storage performance appeared normal afterward, with some write-speed improvement shown in testing.

Apple introduced MacBook Neo on March 4 and began availability on March 11. The system starts at $599 in the US and €699 in Europe, with a 13-inch 2408 x 1506 Liquid Retina display, 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and fanless design based on the A18 Pro chip.
The system is easier to service than recent Apple laptops, but storage expansion still remains a specialist job rather than a consumer-friendly upgrade. If Apple addresses this with a future successor, it would be another advantage and make the device more practical.
