Sony brings 1080p High Quality mode to PlayStation Portal on March 18
Sony has announced a new system software update for PlayStation Portal, adding a 1080p High Quality mode alongside several user interface and cloud streaming changes. The update begins rolling out globally on March 18 in Europe and Japan, and March 17 PDT in other regions.
The main addition is a new 1080p High Quality setting for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming . Sony says this mode uses a higher bitrate than the existing 1080p Standard option, which should improve image quality while keeping the stream at the same resolution. The setting can be enabled through the Quick Menu under Max Resolution, then applied by restarting the session.

Sony is also updating the cloud streaming interface. Game bundles with multiple titles will now show a new selection screen after pressing Stream, letting users choose a specific game directly. The company has also added on-screen game invite notifications for supported streamed titles, which means users can see invitations without leaving the current session.
- Improved Product Detail Page : When you select “Stream” on the product detail pages of game bundles, a new UI will show up, allowing you to select a specific game to play from that bundle.
- Game Invite: If you’re actively streaming a supported title and receive game invites, you’ll now see a clear on-screen notification on PS Portal, ensuring you never miss an invitation while playing.
- Enhanced Trophy notifications: Trophy notifications now clearly display the trophy name and associated image when unlocked. Platinum trophies will also feature their special animation, bringing greater visibility and celebration to your achievements.
- Improved Search screen: The search interface has been refined for a smoother experience, such as the On Screen Keyboard display being available immediately when going into search.
Trophy notifications have also been updated. PlayStation Portal will now show both the trophy image and its name when unlocked, while Platinum trophies get a dedicated animation. Sony has also revised the search screen, including immediate on-screen keyboard access when entering search.
The latest software also changes the onboarding process for new users. Sony says players who do not yet have a PlayStation account can now create one and sign in faster by scanning a QR code on a mobile device. The company says these changes are part of continued improvements to both Remote Play and the PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming experience.
Sony also shared updated usage figures for the device. According to the company, monthly Cloud Streaming users on PlayStation Portal increased by 162% year-over-year in January, while more than half of Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Cloud Streaming on Portal still requires a Premium subscription, while Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps internet for a better play experience.
