Switch 2 could get an EU-only removable battery revision, according to Nikkei
© Nintendo/Ifixit According to Nikkei, as cited by The Verge, Nintendo is preparing a revised Switch 2 model for Europe that would allow users to replace the battery themselves. The report says the change is aimed at compliance with European Union battery rules, and that both the console and Joy-Con controllers would move to replaceable battery designs.
The timing lines up with EU regulation (EU) which says products with portable batteries must allow end users to remove and replace them using commercially available tools, without specialized tools, heat, or solvents. That part of the regulation applies from 18 February 2027.
The current Switch 2 does not fit that description. iFixit’s teardown says the battery is aggressively glued in and requires pry tools plus isopropyl alcohol for removal, which shows why a separate EU revision may be needed if Nintendo wants to keep the current internal layout elsewhere.

Nikkei’s reported claim, relayed by The Verge, is that Japan would keep the same Switch 2 specifications, while the new battery-friendly version would be released for the European market. Nintendo has not publicly confirmed the revision, and there is no indication yet that the change would extend to other regions. For now, the report points to a compliance-driven hardware update, not a broader mid-cycle refresh.
