Imagination demos DirectX 11 on PowerVR D-Series, says DirectX is essential for mainstream PC gaming

Imagination expands PowerVR PC plans with DirectX roadmap update

Imagination Technologies said on LinkedIn that it is working toward full DirectX support for its PowerVR GPU IP, a move aimed at opening the Windows market to more graphics card and SoC designers. The company said hardware-based DirectX support started with its D-Series generation, where DirectX 11 is now running on real silicon.

The company announced IMG DXD in November 2023 as the first D-Series GPU IP with hardware-based DirectX 11 Feature Level 11_0 support. At the time, Imagination said the design targeted desktop, laptop, and cloud gaming use cases, and that it had already been licensed for desktop products.

Imagination’s latest public demo is based on 3DMark Fire Strike, a DirectX 11 benchmark. The company said its D-Series GPU was shown running the test on silicon built for desktop workstations and professional rendering. That is the clearest sign so far that its Windows graphics stack is moving beyond launch claims and into bring-up on actual hardware.

We are busy on our journey to bring full DirectX support to our GPU IP, unlocking the Windows ecosystem for ambitious graphics card and SoC design companies.

DirectX is essential for mainstream PC gaming and pro‑viz workloads. We started adding hardware‑based support for DirectX to our GPUs with our last generation, D-Series, and below you can see it in action, in real silicon, handling complex DirectX 11 workloads with confidence.

DirectX 11 was just the start of a long‑term roadmap that will bring high‑performance, scalable, PowerVR graphics to desktop, workstation, and cloud environments. Keep watching this space for more details!

Imagination wants PowerVR to move further into desktop, workstation, and cloud designs. DXD remains the current DirectX-focused D-Series part, while Imagination also says its newer E-Series generation features hardware-based support for DirectX 12 Feature Level 11_0.
