ASRock motherboards still killing X3D CPUs

ASRock released its latest AM5 BIOS update with AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.3.0.0a and said it was meant to resolve boot failures on certain CPUs, including cases where systems stop booting after a period of use. Redditor posts now indicate that the update hasn’t completely resolved the problem, at least, it hasn’t stopped new cases from arising.
One Ryzen 7 9800X3D owner reported that an X870 Pro RS WiFi system black-screened during normal desktop use and never posted again after restart. The user said the system was running default settings apart from EXPO and that both the CPU and motherboard were sent for RMA.

This is not the first such report tied to BIOS 4.10. Another Redditor with an X870 Riptide WiFi said their system crashed while browsing and listening to music, then started showing a solid red CPU LED. According to that post, the board had been updated to BIOS 4.10 on release day, the system was running stock settings, and swapping in a new Ryzen 7 9800X3D restored POST.

A third report came from a B850 Riptide WiFi owner, who said their Ryzen 7 9800X3D also failed on BIOS 4.10. That user wrote that they had updated to each new BIOS version as it became available, but the CPU still stopped booting, and they claimed this was already the second 9800X3D lost on the same board. The same post also mentioned a visible mark on the processor and said BIOS Flashback plus different memory configurations did not bring the system back.

ASRock’s own statement explained the new firmware as a fix for no-boot behavior on affected AM5 systems. It has brought back some CPUs back to life, but it seems we now have evidence that it does not, in fact, prevent new cases.
