LG Display’s 1Hz to 120Hz laptop panel enters production, Dell XPS first

LG Display says it has started mass production of what it calls the first laptop LCD panel with a 1Hz to 120Hz variable refresh range . The company says the panel uses its Oxide 1Hz technology, which can drop to 1Hz during static workloads such as email, reading, or document work, then scale up to 120Hz for video playback and gaming.

LG Display says the panel detects screen activity and adjusts refresh rate automatically, which reduces unnecessary panel operation when the image is not changing. According to the company, that delivers up to 48% more use on a single charge compared with existing solutions.
LG says it reached this point by developing new circuit algorithms, a new panel design, and oxide materials with lower leakage in low refresh operation. This is an LCD aimed at improving battery life without giving up 120Hz support when higher motion clarity is needed.

The first customer is Dell. LG Display says the panel will ship in Dell’s premium XPS lineup, and Dell had already shown new XPS models at CES 2026 in January. Dell’s CES announcement reintroduced the XPS 14 and XPS 16, both with 2K LCD display options alongside OLED variants. Perhaps this is why XPS laptops are one of the most power efficient laptops, claims NotebookCheck in our earlier report .

LG Display also says it plans to begin mass production of a 1Hz OLED panel using the same approach in 2027. That suggests the company sees this low refresh power-saving design as a broader roadmap item rather than a one-off LCD launch.
