Xbox Full Screen Experience begins rebrand to “Xbox mode”

Xbox mode branding appears in the Xbox app on Windows

ASUS ROG Ally Life reports that Microsoft has started replacing the old “ Xbox Full Screen Experience ” label with “ Xbox mode ” inside the Xbox app. Microsoft announced this change at GDC 2026. The comapny mentioned it would start rolling out to Windows in April, starting in select markets.

Xbox Mode is Microsoft’s controller-first gaming interface for Windows 11. It presents a full-screen Xbox UI designed for browsing a game library, launching titles, opening Game Bar, and switching between apps without relying on the standard desktop layout. Microsoft says it is meant to keep the Xbox look and feel while still letting users jump back to the regular Windows desktop when needed.

The feature was first introduced on June 8, 2025, alongside the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds. At the time, Microsoft described it as a handheld-focused Xbox full screen experience that boots directly into the Xbox interface, reduces background activity, and gives players access to an aggregated library that can include Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC storefronts.

Microsoft later expanded the feature beyond the ASUS handheld launch. In November Xbox said the Full Screen Experience became generally available on Windows 11 handhelds already on the market. The current rebrand to Xbox Mode looks like the final step before the broader Windows 11 rollout to desktops, laptops, tablets, and handhelds announced for April 2026.

And yes, it’s called Xbox mode not Mode, worth keeping that in mind.
