Fiber optic HDMI 2.1 cable enables 48 Gbps bandwidth over distances of up to 300 meters

Well, I didn’t even know such cables existed, but thanks to content creator Ben Geskin we not only know that they do but also that they work. Ben shared some info about a special fiber optic HDMI cable with detachable connectors. Running full-spec HDMI 2.1 bandwidth over longer distances is one of the reasons why new standards are needed, especially for cables. Apparently this cable does not have any special licensing.

This isn’t a regular HDMI cable, it’s fiber optic. The signal is transmitted with light instead of copper, so there’s basically zero signal loss even over long distances.

The RUIPRO cable is a detachable full-fiber HDMI 2.1 cable, which targets long cable runs where maintaining full bandwidth over copper becomes harder. The brand lists the cable as a 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 model with support for 8K at 60 Hz, 4K at 120 Hz, Dynamic HDR, eARC, VRR and ALLM. The company also says the design uses detachable source and display heads connected through a multi-mode fiber link. And of course, since this is a conversion to fiber optic cable, the connectors actually do need 5V USB power to operate.

The company says the optical connector is smaller than a full HDMI plug, which makes conduit installs easier, and the cable itself is listed at 3.0 mm in diameter. The product page also describes the cable as armored, with a stainless steel structure intended to improve bend tolerance and durability. The product page currently lists this model in lengths from 1 meter to 300 meters (990 feets) , with current pricing ranging from $93 to $404.

I’m thinking this could be an interesting solution for people who run really long cables for their multimedia systems. Think, keep the fiber optic cable, but only replace transmitters when something new comes out. It looks like they don’t have any HDMI 2.2 converters yet, though.
