Eidos Montreal has just suffered another round of layoffs, this time losing 124 developers as " a result of changing project needs and impacts across productions and support teams ," according to the studio in a statement on its . Eidos' head of studio, David Anfossi , who has been at the studio for nearly two decades, was a producer on Deus Ex Human Revolution and has been in the head of studio position since 2013 has also left the company.
This layoff comes after reports in December 2025 that the studio had a new Legacy of Kain game cancelled, and laid off several developers along with the project's shutdown. It's unclear if those reported layoffs and this confirmed layoff are one and the same, or if this is a new round of cuts altogether.
What we do know, is that Eidos Montreal has clearly struggled to land a project it could lead all the way to the finish line for a while now. The last game it led was its critically acclaimed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy game, which released in 2021. We know the studio had been running support on Fable , but when that contract seemingly came to an end, the studio also had to make cuts, which, coincidentally, was also in March , almost exactly one year prior to today's cuts.
Eidos Montreal also had a Deus Ex project cancelled by Embracer Group back in 2024, and tried to pitch a different Deus Ex project around to other publishers, though it found no takers, as those the studio spoke to believed Deus Ex to be " too niche ."
" Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos Montreal can be most effective ," the studio writes in its statement. " We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward. "
On Anfossi's departure, Eidos writes, " After many years as Head of Studio, David Anfossi and Eidos Montreal are also parting ways. We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors. A transition plan is underway, and further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalized. Today, however, our priority is supporting our colleagues ."
While Eidos has made no public announcements explicitly stating its next project, back in December 2025, we heard reports of a new open-world action-adventure game on the way , which was said to be led by the team that led Shadow of the Tomb Raider .
