Brother Zhang revives RTX 5090D by moving GPU and memory to a donor PCB
© Brother Zhang Chinese repair technician Brother Zhang has posted a new RTX 5090D repair video, this time dealing with a card whose entire PCIe connector was ripped off so badly that the original PCB was no longer a realistic candidate for a normal slot repair. The card was reportedly bought for around 8,000 yuan as damaged hardware, and the fix ended up being far more involved than simply patching broken traces or rebuilding the connector edge.
There was, in fact, no point in rescuing this card by rewiring the entire PCIe connector. Instead, Zhang removed the GB202 GPU and all memory chips from the damaged board, prepared a donor ASUS RTX 5090 PCB, then moved the original BIOS over so the card could boot with the right firmware.

This kind of repair only makes sense because donor parts are no longer hard to find. As we have already covered before , Chinese firms have been pulling GPUs and memory from gaming cards and moving them onto custom blower-style boards for AI server use at scale. That has created a secondary flow of original coolers and gaming PCBs, so finding a replacement board or shroud for cards like the RTX 5090D is no longer the problem it would have been a year ago.

The repair wasn’t easy, though, as Zhang went through multiple rounds of reballing, short checks, memory fault tracing, and repeated rework before the transplanted card finally posted, installed a driver, and ran again.

Interestingly, moving the GPU to an entirely different board, in this case from Gigabyte to ASUS, is not a major issue. The GPU itself is the same. It only needs a different BIOS to properly control the fans, although even that is not always required, depending on whether the card uses two or three fan controllers.
