Switch 2 recognizes 512GB M.2 SSD in new storage mod
© Mizuyoukan A Japanese modder has shown what appears to be a working way to connect an M.2 NVMe SSD to the Nintendo Switch 2 through its microSD Express slot. The console itself is said to be unmodified, and the storage shows up in the system menu as additional space. That makes this one of the first public examples of a Switch 2 recognizing an M.2 drive in this form.
What makes this different is the design of the adapter. Earlier projects mostly tried a direct pin-to-pin link between the microSD Express interface and an M.2 2230 SSD, but NVNT Labs has already documented that a simple adapter is not enough because the Switch 2 still expects its own handshake process. In this case, the modder used a custom PCB that also includes a microSD Express card path, which appears to handle initialization while the M.2 SSD provides the actual storage capacity.
© Mizuyoukan The modder says the setup uses a 512GB M.2 SSD together with a smaller-capacity microSD Express card. Nintendo officially lists the Switch 2 with 256GB of internal UFS storage, and the company says storage expansion is meant to happen through microSD Express cards only.
The mod clearly doesn’t look like something any gamer would like to carry with the console, but it’s a standard and proof of concept, which may eventually lead to some actual working products.
