Don’t bake it at home: Old GPU oven repair trick returns, this time with a Radeon card

A Redditor claims a dead Radeon graphics card started working again after a 12-minute trip through a household oven. The user said he had already tried cleaning minor corrosion, checking for missing capacitors, and tracing shorts with a multimeter before resorting to heat.
The card was baked at 370°F, around 188°C. The user said the board came back to life after the attempt, though he also reported a side effect. Thermal putty on the back of the memory modules appears to have expanded, leaving a small bulge once the card was reassembled.
The whole idea of “GPU baking” is that the heat may reconnect tiny solder joints or contact points that have cracked, weakened, or separated over time, especially around the GPU package or memory chips. In theory, warming the board can help restore those connections just enough for the card to power on again.
This is also not a new idea. Similar “oven fix” stories have been circulating in forums and Reddit threads for well over a decade. The method keeps resurfacing because it can sometimes bring dead hardware back long enough to boot again, even if the result does not last. In fact, we rarely hear anything about how these cards work later.





Still, this is not something most users should try. Putting electronics in a kitchen oven can damage components, contaminate equipment used for food, and release hazardous fumes. At best, this is a last-resort gamble on hardware that is already considered dead. I still have a few old cards that could be sacrificed for science, but for now the oven is busy doing oven things, and there are so many baking trays there…
