RPCS3 shows new handheld UI, adds Steam Big Picture support

RPCS3 shows emulation improvements for gaming handhelds

RPCS3, the popular emulator for PS3 games on PCs, has published a new showcase for its “Handheld Experience,” a controller-first UI update built around handheld PCs and TV-style play. The new layout looks close to Steam Big Picture and moves more emulator controls into an in-game overlay instead of the usual desktop-style interface. RPCS3 says its lead developers have been redesigning that overlay over the past few weeks.

The update also pushes Steam integration further. RPCS3 says users can now add PS3 games directly to Steam, and the emulator now supports launching and playing those titles through Steam’s Big Picture Mode with full controller interaction. That cuts out part of the usual setup process for Steam Deck and other handheld users.

RPCS3 is also exposing more performance-related options without forcing a restart. The team says render resolution can now be changed on the fly, which is useful on lower-power handheld hardware where per-game tuning is common. RPCS3 has also switched games to start in fullscreen by default.

The official showcase is centered on the Steam Deck, but third-party coverage says RPCS3 also included footage of Skate 3 running on the ASUS ROG Ally X. That suggests this is not just a SteamOS-facing update, but a broader push for Windows handhelds as well.

This video is just a demonstration of existing features that the development team announced last month. These optimizations target handhelds like Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go. Support for Intel-based handhelds is not quite there yet.
