RPCS3 announces FPS boosts in Twisted Metal, one of the most SPU-intensive games, original developer approves

RPCS3 says it has reached a new step in PlayStation 3 CPU emulation. In the post, the team said it achieved “ a new breakthrough” in emulating the PS3’s Cell CPU, with the work centered on new SPU usage patterns discovered by contributor Elad. According to RPCS3, those findings allowed the emulator to generate more optimized PC code from them.
The PS3’s Cell CPU had one general-purpose core called the PPU and several smaller co-processors called SPUs. The PPU handled the main game logic, operating system tasks, and coordination. The SPUs were built for heavy parallel workloads like physics, animation, audio, decompression, and some graphics-related compute tasks.





The project says this change should benefit all games, but it used Twisted Metal as the public example. RPCS3 described Twisted Metal as one of the most SPU-intensive PS3 titles , and said the game now sees a 5 to 7% improvement in average FPS. RPCS3 has previously explained that communication between PPU and SPU threads is a major bottleneck in performance scaling.
All CPUs can benefit from this, from low-end to high-end!

A 5 to 7% average uplift will not change every game in the same way, but on CPU-limited titles it is still a useful gain. RPCS3 did not publish a wider benchmark set in the post, so Twisted Metal is the only named example attached to this announcement so far.
Interestingly, James Stanard, who is credited as Principal Engine Developer on the 2012 PS3 version of Twisted Metal, replied to RPCS3’s post and said he wrote “90% of the SPU code” for the game, including work that moved post-processing effects off the GPU. He said he was proud to see Twisted Metal described as SPU-intensive, adding that the team had effectively maxed out the PPU, SPUs, and RSX at the same time. Twisted Metal was developed by Eat Sleep Play and produced by Santa Monica Studio. He added, he never expected “ PS3 would ever be emulateable”
